Laptop sound through the speakers

When you have connected your laptop to the room's sound system, you may want to play the sound from your laptop to the audience. In most cases, you do not need to adjust any settings, but sometimes a laptop will not automatically select the correct output in Windows. Below is a description of what you can do in that case.

1. Connecting your laptop
First, connect your laptop using USB-C or HDMI. Here is a description of how to do this.

2. Room sound turned on
Check that the sound on the AV control panel is switched on and the volume is loud enough. Click here for an overview of all buildings and rooms and how these panels work.

3. Windows mute
Check whether the sound in Windows is muted. A speaker icon is displayed at the bottom right of the bar. If there is a cross through the speaker icon, it is muted.

Click on this icon to open the sound menu. Click on the speaker icon to unmute.

4. Windows audio output
Check whether Windows is sending the sound to the correct output. Click on the speaker icon again to open the sound menu. Now click on the mixer icon as shown below and select the correct output. In most cases, you will choose one of these options:
- Extron
- AMX
- Crestron

Using an Apple device

Wanneer je een Apple apparaat aansluit op de installatie in een collegezaal, dan is het niet mogelijk om het geluidsniveau op je Apple apparaat zelf te regelen. Je dient het volume dan te bepalen op het AV bedienpaneel.

Also with an Apple device, it is possible that the correct audio output is not selected automatically. For the latest manual for an Apple device, please visit the webpage of Apple.

Microphones

Many lecture halls are equipped with a microphone to amplify your voice in the room and to make you audible when you have requested a weblecture recording

To improve the intelligibility of the lecture, it is advisable to use the microphone as much as possible. The use of the microphone is also required for weblecture recrdings

For an active overview of the microphones you may encounter in the rooms where you teach and how they work, click here.

These are the most common microphones in classrooms.

                        Sennheiser EW 100                                                              Sennheiser Speechline

There are a number of things to keep in mind when using a microphone.

  • In most rooms, the charging station is located on the lectern. The microphone is in the charging station. After the lecture, place the microphone back in the charging station.
  • Mute the microphone during breaks using the mute slider. This ensures that unwanted conversations cannot be heard in the room.
  • Check the battery status before starting your activity. If the battery has only 1 bar out of 3, use the spare battery. Place the empty battery in the charging station.
  • It is also helpful if you use the microphone correctly. This image shows the best position for a lapel and handheld microphone.
