Presentation tips & tricks

Connecting your laptop

In every lecture hall, you can connect your laptop in two ways: via USB-C or via HDMI.

We recommend using USB-C. This will display the image from your laptop on the presentation screen and charge your laptop at the same time.

If you use the HDMI cable, only the image will be transmitted and you will need to charge your laptop separately. There is a power outlet in every room for this purpose.

Please note: never use both cables at the same time. If you do, there will be no image on the presentation screen.

HDMI cable (video cable)                                                USB-C cable (video and charging cable)

Share image to presentation screen

To share your image to the presentation screen, proceed as follows:

1. Turn on the equipment

Turn on the installation for the room. Click here for an overview of all rooms and how to turn them on.

2. Select the source

3. Connect your laptop.
Now connect the appropriate cable. This should be the same cable as the source you have selected.

If you have an image on your own laptop but not on the presentation screen, use the key combination Windows + P (press simultaneously) and select duplicate or extend.

PC screen only: Displays the image only on your laptop.

Duplicate: Displays the same image on both screens.

Extend: View the desktops on multiple screens. When you extend your displays, you can move items between the two screens.

Second screen only: Displays the image only on the presentation screen. This option is not recommended.

Using an Apple device

You can also display the image from your Apple device on a presentation screen. On such a device, you can choose between extending your desktop and displaying it synchronously. For the latest instructions, please visit the Apple website.

HDCP security

HDCP is a security measure for digital images and sound. It prevents protected films or music from being copied when they are sent from your laptop to a screen or projector. It first checks whether both your laptop and the screen support HDCP before displaying the image.

In lecture halls, HDCP can sometimes cause problems, especially with Apple devices.

Even if no recording is being made, your image may briefly appear on the presentation screen and then turn black. This can happen even when you simply connect your laptop and want to show your desktop.

Please note that this is a limitation of the system and we unfortunately cannot to fix this.

Tips that may help resolve this issue:

  • Test beforehand: Test your laptop in the room before your presentation starts.
  • Restart: Switch off both devices and restart them to force a new handshake.
  • Extend display: Make sure your laptop is set to extend, not duplicate.
  • Adjust screen resolution: Sometimes lowering the resolution of your laptop helps to stabilize the image.
  • Change cable: Preferably use USB-C instead of HDMI; this often works better with Apple devices.
  • Alternative laptop: If possible, try using another device that is less sensitive to HDCP.

Presenter view Powerpoint

With Presenter View, you can see your notes and upcoming slides on your laptop, while the audience only sees the current slide on the presentation screen.

This is useful because you can:

  • Follow your own notes without the audience seeing them,
  • Always see which slide is coming next,
  • Have more control over your presentation.

To activate Presenter View:

1. Open your PowerPoint presentation.

2. Select the Slide Show tab.

3. Select the Use presenter view check box.

4. Selecteer welk beeldscherm je wil gebruiken voor de Weergave voor presentator.

5. Start the slide show.

Important: make sure your laptop is set to Extend Display (not Duplicate). This way, your laptop will be seen as a second screen and PowerPoint can use one screen for your slides and the other for your notes.
