Weblecture recording: what should you keep in mind?

Updated on

Proper preparation is essential for a professional and clear web lecture.
Use the tips below to make sure you don't forget anything before, during, and after the recording.

Preparation

1. Check the equipment

  • Turn on the room equipment: Check to make sure the system is on, and select a source (PC or laptop).
  • Microphone: Wear the lavalier microphone provided for the room. You can pick it up at the reception desk or find it in the room.
  • Make sure the microphone is turned on and not muted.
  • Batteries: Check to see if the microphone has enough battery power.
  • Be on time. If there are any technical issues, please contact Audiovisual Services or the IT Help Desk.
  • Keep copyright in mind when using third-party material

2.  Preparing the Area

  • Put your phone on silent.
  • Let your colleagues or students know that you're recording so you won't be interrupted.
  • Warn students in advance that they are not allowed to take screenshots of the web lectures and that sharing web lectures, for example, via social media is prohibited.
  • Avoid clothing with busy patterns or shiny fabrics. These can be distracting on camera.
  • Make sure your presentation is well-prepared and visually clear (not too much text, font size large enough).
  • Wipe down the board (if there is one) beforehand. A cluttered board = a cluttered image

During the recording

  1. Presentation Behavior
    • Stay in the frame: avoid walking back and forth out of the camera's range.
    • Speak clearly: articulate slowly and vary your pitch.
    • Use gestures sparingly: too much movement is distracting, but a little bit adds a nice touch
    • Repeat questions from the audience: the microphone often doesn't pick them up, so repeat them for the recording.
    • Please note that the recording continues even during the break. Both the video and the audio. In the weblecture, you can see what you're doing on the computer.  If you check your email during the break, this will also be included in the web lecture.
You can edit the recording afterward, how to do this is explained on this page.
  2. Interaction & Tools
    • Use the (digital) board thoughtfully: write in large, clear letters.
    • Don't point your finger at the screen: use a digital pointer or the mouse cursor instead.
    • Status light: The red light turns on when recording is in progress. When a Weblectures staff member checks the equipment before recording begins, the red light flashes.

After the recording

1.    Technical finalization

  • Clean up: Place the microphone back in the charging station or return it to the reception desk if you picked it up there.
  • Once you've received the link to the recording in your email, you can post it in Brightspace. You can also choose to edit the recording first. See this page for an explanation
  • After you receive the link to a recording, the recording still needs to be processed by the system. Depending on the number of recordings made in a day, this may take until the next morning. All recordings will be ready to view no later than the day after they are recorded.
