Attach a grade item to a quiz
When you want to appraise a quiz, you can do so with the help of a grade item. You first need to attach a grade item to the quiz.
Read the article How do I create a grade item? if you are unfamiliar with grade items and want to learn how to create a grade item.
- Go to Activities in the navbar of your course.
- Click Quizzes. You will now end up at the Quiz homepage, where you will find an overview of your quizzes.
- In the overview, search for the quiz you want to attach to a grade item and click the fold-out arrow.
- Click Edit. You will navigate to the Properties tab of the quiz.
If you want to attach a grade item to a new quiz, read the article: How do I create a quiz? to learn how to create a new quiz.
- Under Grade Out Of, enter the maximum number of points to be scored.
- Click the drop-down menu. You will find three options here and two of them allow you to link a grade item to your topic:
- In Grade Book: Brightspace automatically creates a grade item with the name of your topic and the maximum number of points you chose.
- Edit or Link to Existing: you can create a new grade item yourself or link the topic to an existing grade item.
If you choose Edit or Link to Existing, you will see a new screen.
You here can select:
- Link to an existing grade item to link the topic to an existing grade item and select the grade item you want to link.
- Create and link to a new grade item to add the grade item to a Grade Category and select a Grade Scheme.
Read the article How do I create a grade item? if you are unfamiliar with grade items and want to learn how to create a grade item.
When a grade item is already in use by another activity, it no longer appears in the drop-down menu.
Evaluation & Feedback
On the right-hand side of your screen, you will see four blocks.
- Click the arrow next to Evaluation & Feedback to expand this tab.
- Enable Auto-publish attempt results immediately upon completion if you want students to see their scores immediately after taking the quiz.
- You need to enable this option if you want Brightspace to automatically put grades in the grade book (point 3).
- The displayed score only reflects what Brightspace can calculate automatically. NB: questions that you have to grade manually (such as open-ended questions) are given a score of zero in Brightspace. This means that students may get a (highly) distorted picture of what their score is, if you enable this option while the quiz contains many open-ended questions.
- Under Synchronise to grade book on publish, enable whether automatically graded quiz attempts are put directly into the grade book. Note: you must first link a grade item to the quiz to use this option. In addition, you must have Auto-publish attempt results immediately upon completion enabled (point 2).
Although synchronisation is possible between the grade book and the grade in the quiz, we recommend manually grading the quiz via Activities. To do so, see the guide How do I grade a quiz (grade item)?
Number of submission attempts
On the right-hand side (above the Evaluation & Feedback tab) you will also find the Attempts & Completion tab. Here you can indicate how many times students may take and submit the quiz. If students have multiple attempts, you also indicate which score counts towards the assessment of the quiz.
- Click the arrow next to Attempts & Completion to expand the tab.
- Click Manage Attempts.
A new window will now open.
- Under Attempts Allowed, specify how many times students can take the quiz. Have you chosen more than one attempt? Then you will be presented with a number of options.
- Select which submission attempt(s) will count in the quiz assessment:
- Highest Attempt: only the attempt with the highest score counts.
- Lowest Attempt: only the attempt with the lowest score counts.
- Average of all Attempts: the final score is the average of the scores of all the attempts.
- First Attempt: only the first attempt counts.
- Last Attempt: only the last attempt counts.
- Enable Retake Incorrect Questions Only to show students on the next attempt just the questions they previously answered incorrectly.
- Under Attempt Conditions, you can specify whether students must achieve a certain score on a submission attempt to be allowed another attempt. You can set both a minimum and a maximum score. To do this, click on + Attempt Conditions.
- For each attempt, enter the minimum and maximum percentage that students must get right to proceed to the next attempt.
- Click OK to save your changes and return to the quiz editing page.
You can give certain students more/less submission attempts. You do this under the Availability Dates & Conditions tab. Take a look at the manual on restrictions to learn more.
You can always attach a grade item to a quiz, even if there are already students who have taken the quiz. The scores are automatically synchronised in the grade book.
