Turnitin is an external tool that has been integrated in Brightspace to assess assignments/papers/etc. and to check them for plagiarism.
- Originality Check checks for plagiarism in Turnitin.
The plagiarism report
The plagiarism report can be opened by clicking on the percentage of a submitted assignment in Brightspace.

This looks as follows:
- You can easily navigate to other students' submitted documents by clicking the left or right arrows.
- Click on the download button to download the plagiarism report or click on the i to see the details of the plagiarism report.
- In the centre of the page, you see the document itself. All pieces of text that are coloured can be found in Turnitin's database. This does not immediately mean it is plagiarism. If you click on the coloured text, the source appears on the right in the menu.
- At the top right, you see the Similarity Score. The similarity score indicates what percentage of the submission's text matches (almost) word for word with text from Turnitin's databases. How high the score is is not that important in itself. A high score does not unequivocally demonstrate plagiarism, and vice versa. What matters is the similarity itself - what is it, was the source correctly indicated, etc.?
- Under Match Groups, you will see the sources found grouped according to the type of text match.
- Under Sources you will see all sources in order of the submitted document.

- You can also view Filters at the top right. These filters give options to exclude student databases, internet content and academic texts. You also have an additional set of exclusion filters:

The source cards
The right-hand side shows all source cards. You open a source card by clicking on it. The document immediately goes to the piece of text where the overlap was found.

- The source card shows name of the source, the database, and the number of matching words and text blocks. On the right is the percentage of match between the submission and this source.
- Below it is the link to the source, the similarity in context of the source and button to display the full source text.
- When you click Exclude Match, the match is excluded from the plagiarism report. The match is then excluded in all found sources.
- Under View other sources, you find other sources that contain (part of) the same text as the primary source.
- By clicking on the circle with a line, you can exclude a source from the document. However, if there are more sources with the same match, they will remain.
- You can also exclude specific pieces of text in the document by selecting a piece of text that is highlighted and then clicking Exclude this Text.
Components you exclude from the plagiarism report will appear under the Overall Similarity percentage under the [X] Exclusion button. Here you can retrieve and undo the excluded pieces of text.
Flags
Finally, at the top below the file name, you have Flags.
These are integrity flags. These include 2 types:
- Hidden text Flags: characters made white so they are invisible on white background.
- Replaced characters: Characters that appear in a word, but in a different alphabet than the surrounding word.
