How do I use Turnitin in Brightspace? Activities | Assignments

Updated on

Turnitin is an external tool that has been integrated in Brightspace to assess assignments/papers/etc. and to check them on plagiarism.

  • Originality Check checks for plagiarism in Turnitin.

Create an Assignment

  • Navigate to Activities in the navbar of your course.
  • Click Assignments. You will land on the Assignments homepage. Here you will see an overview of all the assignments you have made.
  1. Click New Assignment to create a new assignment.
  2. Click on the arrow behind an assignment to open the quick-menu.
  3. Click Edit Assignment to make adjustments to the assignment.

Beware: it is not possible to set a due date via Turnitin, this can only be done in the assignment. You can read about this in the article: How do I set restrictions for an Assignment? Under restrictions you can fill in a due date and an end date: when students hand in an assignment after the due date has passed, you can see that the assignment was handed in late in Brightspace. After the end date (if there is one) has passed, students can no longer view the assignment.

Enable Originality CheckĀ®

  1. Under the Submission Type button, you can choose the top three options: File Submission, File or Text Submission or Text Submission. The other options do not work with Turnitin.
  2. If you want to make sure students submit the correct file type, you can choose the option Compatible with Turnitin under Allowable File Extensions. Students will then be shown which file types they can submit when submitting their assignment.
  3. Click Manage Turnitin to open all options related to Turnitin.
  1. Under Similarity Report, tick Enable Similarity Report for this folder to turn Turnitin on. It takes a few seconds for the remaining options to become clickable.
  2. Indicate under Display whether students will get insight into the plagiarism score of their assignment or not.
  3. Under Submissions Checked you can choose whether:
    • Turnitin automatically checks all submitted work (Automatic similarity checking on all submissions);
    • Turnitin only checks submissions that have been chosen manually (Identify individual submissions for similarity checking).
  4. Click More Options to change more settings in Turnitin.
  5. Click Save to return to the Assignments homepage.

Additional settings in Turnitin

  1. Indicate under Submission settings:
    • whether all assignments are saved in the Turnitin repository (Standard paper repository) or not (Do not store the submitted papers);
    • In case the work is saved in the repository, the submitted assignment will also be used to check for plagiarism. Would you like to see plagiarism scores for non-final versions of assignments as well? Then choose the option Do not store the submitted papers.
    • The other two options are controlled in Brightspace and therefore cannot be changed.
  2. Select under Similarity Report:
    • when the plagiarism check should take place. Turnitin provides three options. The first option Generate reports immediately generates a report as soon as the student submits something. The second option Generate reports immediately (students can resubmit until due date) also generates a report as soon as the student submits something, but also re-generates this report on the due date. The third option Generate reports on due date generates a report as soon as the due date of the assignment has passed.
    • whether the plagiarism checker should also take bibliographies (for example an overlap in literature references), quotes and small similarities into account. For the different options, you can use the question mark to see the explanation.
  3. Select under Compare against:
    • if Turnitin should compare the assignments with assignments that are in the Turnitin repository.
    • if Turnitin should check assignments for internet sources.
    • if Turnitin should check for periodicals, journals and and other publications.
  4. Indicate under Additional settings if you want to use the settings above in the future as well.
  5. Click Submit when all settings are to your liking.

Hover your mouse over each question mark to see what the option entails.
