How can I set up what students see when they submit a quiz?

Updated on

When students hand in a quiz, they get the following standard message: Your quiz has been submitted successfully. You can edit this message and indicate which quiz information you wish to make (un)available for students (for example: are they able to see which questions were answered correctly, can they see their own score or also the class average etc).

  • Go to to Activities in the navbar of your course.
  • Click Quizzes.
  • Click the desired quiz.

Evaluation & Feedback

  1. Click the arrow next to Evaluation & Feedback to unfold that tab.
  2. Enable Auto-publish attempt results immediately upon completion if you want the results of automatically graded questions to become visible to the students immediately after completing the quiz. Please note: questions that are not automatically graded (such as open-ended questions) will count as 0 points in this result.
  3. Enable Synchronize to grade book on publish if you want the grade to be synchronised to the Grade Book after the score is published.
  4. Enable Attempt grade if you want the grade of the quiz attempt to be visible to the student when it is published.
  5. If you want to make the grade visible, choose here whether you want to show the questions as well. You can choose:
    • No questions if you do not want to show any questions;
    • Incorrect questions only, with correct answers if you only want to show the wrongly answered questions with the right answers;
    • Incorrect questions only, without correct answers if you only want to show the wrongly answered questions;
    • All questions, with correct answers if you want to show all questions with the correct answers;
    • All questions, without correct answers if you want to show all the questions without the correct answer.
  6. Click on Customize Quiz Results Displays to customise the screen that students are shown immediately after submitting the quiz.

Quiz Results Displays: Primary view

Once you have clicked Customise Quiz Results Displays, you will be shown a pop-up window. Here you can further customise the primary view (the view you set up under Evaluation & Feedback) and add additional views if necessary.

Under Primary View are the current settings.

  1. Message: Here you can see the message students see after completing a quiz.
  2. Grade: Here you can see whether the grade of the attempt is shown.
  3. Questions: Here you can see whether (and if so, which) questions are shown
  4. Answers: Here you can see whether (and if so, which) correct answers are shown.
  5. Learners Responses: Here you can see whether the student's answers are shown.

Want to change something? Then click Edit View.

  1. If necessary, adjust the text.
  2. Enable Display attempt grade for evaluated questions if you want the score for the assessed questions to be shown.
  3. Choose which questions to show. If you choose to show questions, you are shown three or four options that you can tick:
    • Show the correct answers to the displayed questions: enable this if you want to show the correct answers to the questions.
    • Show the learner's responses to the displayed questions: enable this if you want to show the student's responses to the questions.
    • Show the learner's grade for the displayed questions: enable this if you want to show the number of marks the student has obtained for the displayed questions.
    • Show standards for the displayed questions: enable this if you want to show the standards a good answer should meet for the displayed questions.
  4. Enable which statistics you want to show:
    • Display class average if you want to show the average grade of all participants.
    • Display grade distribution if you want to show how the grades are distributed and how other participants scored for each question.
  5. Click Update to save your changes.

You can also include a link in the message to another section in Content or Activities, so students know what to do after the quiz.

Questions that you have to grade manually (such as open-ended questions) are given a score of zero in Brightspace. So if you use open-ended questions in a quiz, it is better not to check Display attempt grade for evaluated questions. Otherwise, the student will get a wrong idea of their score.

Quiz Results Display: Additional views

Create an extra student view for a quiz, for example if you want to show students different data than normal on a particular quiz attempt. This way, you can only show the correct answers on the second or third attempt. You can also set restrictions for time and date and minimum/maximum score. If you want to add restrictions to a view, you can use an additional view.

Click + Additional View to add an additional view.

Enter the restrictions a student must meet to see the additional view here.

  1. Under Display Date, select the date and time from when the additional view becomes active.
  2. A specific attempt: You can link the additional view to a specific attempt. For example, you can show the additional view on a student's third attempt.
  3. And a specific grade range achieved: if you link the additional view to a specific attempt, you can also set it to only show the additional view if the student's score lies within a specific range.  To do so, enter the minimum and maximum score here.
  4. Enable The same IP restrictions as the quiz to limit the visibility of the message to the IP addresses that also have access to the associated quiz. Note: for this, you must also have imposed an IP restriction when setting up the quiz.
  5. Enable A limited amount of time (in minutes) after submission if you want the message to be visible only for a limited time after the student has submitted the quiz. Specify the time in minutes.

Filling in a Display Date can be useful if you want to show the answers, but you don't want fast students to pass the answers on to slower students.

  • If you scroll down, you will see the same options as when customising the primary view.
  • Enter your preferences there.
  • Click Create to save the settings.

Whether students see the submission view depends on the quiz settings. If you enable students to see their score for the questions or the submission attempt in the submission view, the view is not visible until it is graded. If you have set Brightspace to automatically grade the quiz, students will see the view immediately. However, if you have set that you yourself grade the quiz, students will not be able to see the view until you publish the grade. If you do not enable students to see their score, they will see the view immediately after submitting the quiz or on the date you set.

Preview

If you want to see what the view looks like for students, you can preview your quiz.

  • Navigate to Activities in the navbar of your course.
  • Click Quizzes. You will navigate to Manage Quizzes.
  1. Click on the fold-out arrow next to the quiz you want to preview.
  2. Click Preview.
  1. You will see an overview of the quiz (students will also see this) below Quiz Details.
  2. Select Bypass Restrictions to bypass any restrictions you might have set up for students.
  3. Use Exit Preview to return to Manage Quizzes.
  4. Click Start Quiz! to start the quiz in the preview and do the quiz. When you are finished, click Submit Quiz.
  1. Select Allow this preview attempt to be graded in the Grade Quiz area if you want the attempt in the preview to be assessed. Note that scores for attempts made in preview mode will not be included when the quiz statistics are calculated.
  2. Click Submit Quiz.

In the example above an additional submission view has been set up, which allows students to see the answers and the achieved score directly after handing in an attempt.

  • Click Done.

You will be directed to an overview page with all quiz attempts and possible quiz statistics (in the example above students do not see quiz statistics). When you click an attempt, you will once again see the established submission view for each question.

  • In the drop-down menu of Submission View you can select of which view you would like to see a preview.
  • Click Exit Preview to return to Manage Quizzes.
